Theories with a dark sector, that communicates with the visible sector only via U(1) kinetic mixing, are interesting because they could provide an explanation for dark matter. If the dark sector contains light particles, these could be produced in the interior of a star and accelerate its cooling. I show that, considering the well-understood cooling laws of white dwarfs and supernovae, one can place significant constraints on these models.
