In recent years the gradient flow has become a new tool to study non-perturbative aspects of strongly coupled quantum field theories. In this seminar I will first review the basic properties of the gradient flow, and then move to one of the main applications: the computation of the running of the strong coupling in both QCD and strongly coupled BSM models. Finally, if time allows, I will comment on some future possible applications.
