Miniworkshop in physics of the big problems
PROGRAMME:
10:45 - 12:00: Charla de César Gómez
Title: Gravity Self Completeness
Abstract:
We will discuss the possibility of UV completing gravity without adding any extra degree of freedom and some implications of this approach.
12:00 - 13:30: Charla de Peter Goldreich
Title: Physics in Everyday Life
Abstract:
Peter Goldreich (Professor at Caltech & IAS, Princeton) has worked on orbital dynamics, solar rotation, magnetospheres, pulsars, astronomical masers, circumstellar disks, solar oscillations, planetary rings, shepherd satellites, interstellar turbulence, white-dwarf pulsations. His list of awards includes the National Medal of Science in 1995.
In this talk, Peter discusses the physics mechanisms underlying some natural phenomena. Examples will be drawn from human metabolism, sports, flight and weather.
15:30 - 17:00: Charla de Deda Gillespie y Daniel Goldrecih (Mc Master U.)
Title: Informal discussion on neuroscience research
Abstract:
Informal discussion on neuroscience research programs:
a) Neural development, plasticity, and sensory processing.
b) Tactile perception from the points of view of physics (the mechanical stimulus to the skin), neurophysiology (the neural response), and probability calculus (the perceptual inference).
